3AM Theatre (9-20 35th Ave #3N, Astoria, NY 11106), in association with Vangeline Theater and the New York Butoh Institute, will present States: Observation, a Butoh dance trilogy created and performed by Scoop Slone, March 5–7 at 7:30 p.m.

The performances will take place at 3AM Theatre, 9-20 35th Ave., Unit 3N, in Astoria. Tickets start at $16.79.

States: Observation comprises three works — OriginMutation, and Entropy at Absolute Zero — and draws inspiration from quantum physics, particularly the theory that reality remains probabilistic and undefined until it is observed. Through Butoh, the avant-garde Japanese dance form, Slone explores themes of identity, memory, and transformation, incorporating personal and collective queer narratives.

The trilogy examines the fragmentation and fluidity of the self, using improvisation informed by research, somatics, and symbolism. A central concept in the work is “MA,” the Japanese aesthetic of negative space, representing transitional states between identities and moments in time.

The project was previously developed and presented in various forms at festivals and venues in New York City, Amsterdam, Venice, and Japan. In November 2024, a documentary short of Entropy at Absolute Zero by videographer Shimmyo Shuta screened at Mana Contemporary, hosted by the Jonas Mekas Archives. The work has also been shown in India and at the Kamaitachi Museum in Tohoku, Japan, during the 60th anniversary of the collaboration between Butoh founder Hijikata Tatsumi and photographer Hosoe Eikoh.

Sound design is by Slone and Jorge Sanders, who will perform live electronic improvisations. Lighting and production support are by Kyle Driggs, artistic director of 3AM Theatre.

The program is made possible with support from the New York State Council on the Arts, the Office of the Governor, and the New York State Legislature, as well as the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the City Council.

Founded as a multidisciplinary performance company, 3AM Theatre blends contemporary circus, modern dance, and physical theater. Vangeline Theater, home of the New York Butoh Institute, is dedicated to advancing Butoh through performance, education, and community engagement, including its annual New York Butoh Institute Festival and Queer Butoh programming.

Performances run March 5–7 at 7:30 p.m. in Astoria.
