The 92nd Street Y will present Grammy Award-winning tenor Freddie Ballentine and pianist Kunal Lahiry in Our People, a recital exploring Black and LGBTQ experiences through song, on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. at Buttenwieser Hall at The Arnhold Center, 1395 Lexington Avenue. Tickets start at $45 in-person and $25 for the livestream.

The program, part of the Marshall Weinberg Classical Music Season, is arranged in four pillars: isolation, damnation, remembrance, and revolution. The evening will feature music ranging from spirituals to works by Copland, Ricky Ian Gordon, Schubert, Gershwin, and Nina Simone, guiding the audience on a journey from struggle to hope.

Ballentine, a native of Norfolk, Virginia, has performed with the Metropolitan Opera, English National Opera, and Washington National Opera. He was the 2021 recipient of the Washington National Opera’s Marian Anderson Award and is an alumnus of both the Cafritz Young Artists program and LA Opera’s Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program. His 2025–26 season includes debuts at Bayerische Staatsoper and the Rurhtriennale, along with a return to the Met in Porgy and Bess.

Pianist Kunal Lahiry, a former BBC New Generation Artist, has performed at major venues including Carnegie Hall, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and Philharmonie de Paris. Lahiry has championed underrepresented 20th-century composers and explores cross-disciplinary collaborations spanning pop, jazz, and contemporary classical music.

Our People includes selections such as “Shut Me Out,” “Strange Fruit,” Gershwin’s The Man I Love, and Nina Simone’s “Backlash Blues.” The concert emphasizes the power of song to convey resilience and hope in the face of adversity.
