The holidays will take an unexpected and entertaining turn this season as 92NY presents The Bang Group’s Nut/Cracked, the acclaimed and delightfully offbeat reimagining of The Nutcracker. The production returns by popular demand to 92NY’s Kaufmann Concert Hall ( 1395 Lexington Ave, New York, NY 10128) with two in-person performances on Saturday, December 13 at 2 PM and Tuesday, December 16 at 6:30 PM. For those celebrating from home, a virtual streaming option will be available from December 14 at 12 PM through December 18 at 12 PM. Tickets begin at $20.
Part holiday celebration and part comedic dance romp, Nut/Cracked has captivated audiences for more than twenty years with its clever, eclectic, and warmly irreverent approach to Tchaikovsky’s classic. The Bang Group blends tap, ballet en pointe, modern dance, and theatrical physicality with playful elements such as bubble wrap, disco stylings, and even take-out noodles. The result is a production that honors tradition while simultaneously rethinking it with energy, wit, and a deep love of performance.
Choreographer David Parker draws inspiration from across the dance spectrum, finding beauty in unexpected places. The production incorporates many incarnations of Tchaikovsky’s familiar score, including versions by Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller, alongside the original orchestral suite. These bold musical shifts, paired with theatrical humor and technical precision, make Nut/Cracked accessible to families while offering seasoned dance fans something refreshingly different.
Following each performance, audience members are welcome to stay for the Winter Wonderland Afterparty, co-hosted with The Craft Studio. The Warburg Lounge will be transformed into a festive celebration space featuring sweet treats, themed photo opportunities, hands-on crafts, a tap-dancing station, and additional seasonal surprises. All activities are included with the price of admission, making Nut/Cracked not only a performance but a full holiday outing.
With its blend of comedy, craft, dance, and tradition, Nut/Cracked has become one of New York’s most distinctive December performances — and a favorite annual event for many families.
