Margaret Glaspy brings her new project, The Golden Heart Protector, to Le Poisson Rouge in New York City on Thursday, October 16. The project, featuring seven covers and collaborations with friends including Julian Lage, Madison Cunningham, Andrew Bird, and Alam Khan, showcases Glaspy’s ability to reinterpret beloved songs with fresh perspective and emotional depth. A highlight from the release features Norah Jones performing their take on Wilco’s “Jesus, Etc.”, which elicited high praise from Jeff Tweedy: “Holy shit! That’s all I’ve ever wanted my whole life—somebody else to sing my songs in a way that allows me to hear them as something new. So beautiful. Made me cry quite a bit.”
Margaret Glaspy first connected with James Bay in 2016, when a chance festival overlap led to a backstage exchange of admiration and music. Years later, after sharing a stage in London and discovering the magic of duetting on Jackson Browne’s “These Days,” the two finally found themselves in Los Angeles at the same time, seizing the moment to record the song together. Glaspy shared the track earlier this week, with Bay commenting, “I’m so grateful to Margaret for her friendship and inspiration, I’m such a huge fan of her work.”
The Golden Heart Protector features seven tracks in total, including four additional songs reimagined through Glaspy’s singular lens, with selections from Magnetic Fields, Lucinda Williams, Rufus Wainwright, Blake Mills, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Each cover brings new emotional depth while honoring the spirit of the originals. Glaspy notes, “‘The Golden Heart Protector’ is out now. Seven of my favorite songs, all played with my favorite musicians. Interpreting such great songs was a true pleasure. I learned so much making this album—the biggest being that music is amazing and that community is humbling. Thank you to all the incredible musicians, songwriters, and teams who made this possible.”
The project has already been featured on NPR’s New Music Friday and drawn attention from outlets including Stereogum, BrooklynVegan, and MXDWN. Glaspy will bring The Golden Heart Protector to the stage this fall, kicking off at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco in October, with additional dates in New York City, Washington, DC, Boston, and other cities. Tickets are on sale now.
The Golden Heart Protector follows Glaspy’s 2023 EP The Sun Doesn’t Think and her full-length album Echo The Diamond, which earned praise from The New York Times, NPR, The New Yorker, and Rolling Stone. That LP, a study in stripped-down emotional honesty, yielded singles like “Act Natural,” “Memories,” and “Get Back,” earning critical acclaim and chart success, including “Act Natural” reaching the AAA Radio top 20.
Originally from Red Bluff, California, Glaspy began writing songs at 15, quickly developing a style defined by raw sensitivity and razor-sharp insight. She launched her solo career with the self-released Homeschool EP in 2012, and after signing with ATO Records in 2015, released a 7-inch in 2016 featuring “You and I” and “Somebody to Anybody,” which later appeared on her debut full-length Emotions and Math, establishing her as a bold new voice in indie rock.
