South Street Seaport Museum will explore the hidden stories beneath New York City’s waterfront during “Archaeology of the Maritime City: Stories from the Depths” on Saturday, October 18, 2025, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 213 Water Street. The event is free with museum admission.
The Seaport area, home to some of New York City’s earliest large-scale archaeological excavations, preserves a wealth of artifacts and objects uncovered over decades of study. Many of these are on display in the museum’s Maritime Cityexhibition, which visitors can explore prior to the program.
This year’s event is part of the Professional Archaeologists of New York annual public program, highlighting the discoveries that illuminate the city’s rich maritime history. Attendees will hear directly from experts involved in key excavations, including:
- Joan H. Geismar, LLC – A Little Dutch Brick that Helped Sink a Ship
- Elizabeth D. Meade, AKRF – The City that Never Sloops: Updates on the World Trade Center Ship
- Kevin Wiley and Leah Mollin-Kling, NYC Archaeological Repository – All in the Same Boat: Institutional Collaborations at the NYC Archaeological Repository
- Chris Pickerell, Cornell University Cooperative Extension – Pickles of the Caribbean: New York Oysters in the Age of Sail
Each presentation will be followed by a Q&A, allowing attendees to engage with the experts. The evening will conclude with two short award ceremonies and a reception.
The museum closes at 5:00 p.m., so visitors are encouraged to explore the three-floor Maritime City exhibition ahead of the program. Preregistration is recommended, though walkups will be accommodated as space allows.
