Out of the Box Theatre Company will present a staged dramatic reading of Animal Farm, George Orwell’s timeless and chilling satire of power and corruption, adapted for the stage by Nelson Bond. Performances will take place October 17–19 at the Bernie Wohl Center, 647 Columbus Avenue in Manhattan.
What begins as a jubilant revolution by farm animals seeking freedom from their human oppressors quickly unravels into a dark examination of how idealism can be twisted into tyranny. Through biting wit and unsettling realism, Animal Farmremains a potent warning about the fragility of freedom and the manipulation of truth — themes that continue to resonate in today’s world.
Director Jeffery V. Thompson describes the production as both timely and timeless. “Orwell’s fable feels terrifyingly modern,” he said. “Nelson Bond’s adaptation of Animal Farm is a compelling take on this dream-come-true descending into a nightmare. It’s a cautionary tale ‘as old as time’ and as relevant ‘as tonight’s evening news.’ Our company’s seasoned actors bring to life the animals of this mythical barnyard — whose aspirations, ambitions, and flaws mirror our own so closely, it’s often hard to distinguish those who walk on four legs from those who walk on two.”
The talented cast includes Christopher Michael Bauer*, Susan Case*, Bob Greenberg, Kathleen Huber*, Alvin Keith*, Darrie Lawrence*, Roumel Reaux*, and John Robert Tillotson*. The production team features scenic design by Harlan Penn, costumes by Katherine Roberson, lighting by Stephen Cornelius, and sound design by Zack Dornfeld. Crystal Ramirez-Neil serves as stage manager, with production by Halina Malinowski.
Animal Farm was completed in 1944 but initially faced publishing challenges due to its criticism of the Soviet Union, then a British ally during World War II. Released in 1945, the novella became an international success and remains one of the most enduring works of political literature.
Performances are scheduled for:
- Friday, October 17 at 7:30 p.m.
- Saturday, October 18 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
- Sunday, October 19 at 3 p.m.
Tickets are $35, or $30 for seniors and students, and can be purchased at outoftheboxtheatre.ludus.com.
Presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc., this limited run promises an unforgettable reimagining of Orwell’s masterwork — a story that continues to challenge, provoke, and inspire audiences nearly 80 years after it was written.
