The South Street Seaport Museum, in collaboration with Mariner Theatrical, invites audiences aboard the historic 1885 tall ship Wavertree for “ALL HANDS”, a unique staged reading performed with live music, on Friday, November 7, at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $25.
Set on the ‘tweendeck of the Wavertree, this intimate performance immerses attendees in the experiences of sailors aboard U.S. Navy ships during the Civil War. The live-scored reading combines historical text and theatrical storytelling to bring pivotal but often overlooked maritime battles to life, providing a window into the voices and lives of those who served at sea.
The performance text was compiled and written by Andy Sowers, drawing on historical sources including Diary of a Contraband: The Civil War Passage of a Black Sailor by William B. Gould IV and White Jacket; Or, The World In a Man-Of-War by Herman Melville. The evocative live score is provided by Faoileán, enhancing the immersive atmosphere of the historic vessel.
Attendees should note that the ‘tweendeck is not temperature-controlled, so warm clothing is recommended for comfort. Wine and seltzer will be available on the main deck for those who wish to enjoy refreshments during the performance.
Preregistration is encouraged, though walk-ups will be accommodated as space allows. This one-of-a-kind evening promises to combine history, theater, and live music for a memorable maritime experience.
