Skullcrusher to perform in Brooklyn in April

Skullcrusher, the project of singer-songwriter Helen Ballentine, has released her highly anticipated album, And Your Song is Like a Circle, via her new label, Dirty Hit. The album comes alongside the announcement of Skullcrusher’s first North American headline tour in years, kicking off in March 2026 and concluding in mid-April, with a key stop at April 15 at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg. Tickets are available now.
Recorded over several years following her acclaimed 2022 debut Quiet the Room, And Your Song is Like a Circle explores the aftermath of grief and the imprint of lived experience. The album weaves together elegant folk instrumentation with crystalline electronics, hovering in the atmospheric spaces reminiscent of Grouper and Julia Holter. Ballentine’s songwriting examines how loss reshapes perception, making absence as tangible as presence.
The making of the album coincided with a period of profound personal upheaval. After leaving Los Angeles, where she had lived for nearly a decade, Ballentine returned to her native Hudson Valley in New York, separating from her chosen family to reconnect with her blood relatives. In interviews, she has discussed struggles with addiction, disassociation, and recovery during this time, describing the experience as akin to Edgar Allan Poe’s “Descent Into the Maelstrom.”
The album’s lead single, “Exhale,” combines intricate vocal melodies with a haze of synthesizers and strings, accompanied by a video shot in upstate New York in and around Ballentine’s mother’s house. Other highlights include the piano-driven opening track “March,” the dark, pulsing pop song “Dragon,” and the lush, harmony-laden “Living.” Ballentine recorded the album both at home and in friends’ studios, collaborating with producers such as apob and Isaac Eiger. Throughout, she experimented with unconventional recording techniques, including using contact microphones on her throat to explore the voice’s raw textures.
Ballentine describes the album as an exploration of impermanence and the fragile traces left by fleeting moments. “The voice is my favorite instrument because everybody has it,” she says. “It’s related to so many different kinds of sounds: crying, screaming, laughing. It’s ephemeral. It’s going to eventually die.”
The North American tour promises to bring the intimate, atmospheric sound of And Your Song is Like a Circle to audiences across the continent. The Brooklyn date at Music Hall of Williamsburg on April 15, 2026 will be one of the tour’s standout performances, offering fans a chance to experience Ballentine’s hauntingly beautiful music live.
