Teatro Grattacielo will launch its 32nd season in 2026 with a lineup that highlights opera as a collaborative and community-driven art form, featuring two world premieres, a reimagined Mozart classic and expanded educational and public programming.
The season — described by the company as a “city of ideas, creativity and community” — marks a new chapter in artistic leadership. Creative Director Cate Pisaroni, Music Director Abdiel Vázquez and Associate Music Director Enrico Fagone join Artistic and General Director Stefanos Koroneos, Chairman Enzo Pizzimenti and the company’s board and staff to further develop the company’s artistic identity.
The centerpiece of the summer lineup is the world staged premiere of Joseph Summer’s The Tempest, July 16 and 18 at the Ellen Stewart Theater at La MaMa. Conducted by Fagone and directed by Koroneos, the production adapts Shakespeare’s final play through a contemporary musical lens, with a libretto written by the composer’s daughter, Eve Summer. The cast includes Daniel Klein, Kelly Guerra, Maia Gonzalez, Sarah Rose Johnson and Omar Najmi, joined by the Teatro Grattacielo Orchestra.
Mozart’s Così fan tutte follows on July 17 and 19 at La MaMa, presented in a new production directed by Pisaroni and conducted by Vázquez. The staging reframes the opera through a polyamorous and design-led concept, drawing inspiration from Bauhaus minimalism and Lars von Trier’s Dogville. While maintaining Mozart’s irreverence and comedy, the production explores themes of emotional transparency, identity and the evolving nature of relationships.
In November, the company will present a double bill titled 250 America at the Sam Theater at The Flea (Nov. 7 and 8). The program will feature the world premiere of Jefferson Lives! by Joshua Daniel Nichols and James Harrigan — created to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence — alongside Puccini’s Suor Angelica. Together, the operas examine freedom through political, historical and spiritual lenses.
Along with its mainstage productions, Teatro Grattacielo will continue to grow two key initiatives created under Koroneos’ leadership: Creative Tableaux and Opera at Gotham Park.
Creative Tableaux offers tuition-free training and mentorship in performance and stagecraft for young and emerging artists, culminating in free public performances and community programming. Opera at Gotham Park — created in partnership with the nonprofit redeveloping public spaces beneath the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge — brings opera and multidisciplinary performances to outdoor, youth-centered spaces, including the skateboarding community.
Founded in 1994, Teatro Grattacielo has earned acclaim for reviving rarely performed Italian works and premiering contemporary operas while expanding outreach programming. Recent highlights include Nicolas Flagello’s Beyond the Horizon in 2024 and Daniel Asia’s The Tin Angel in 2025.
