As the holiday season approaches in New York City, The Russian Tea Room (150 W 57th St, New York, NY 10019) is once again transforming into one of Manhattan’s most festive destinations for seasonal dining and celebrations.
Founded in 1926 by members of the Russian Imperial Ballet, the landmark restaurant has remained a fixture of New York’s cultural scene for nearly a century. Steps from Carnegie Hall and Central Park, the four-story venue becomes a holiday showpiece each winter, featuring crimson banquettes, forest-green walls, chandeliers trimmed with red ornaments, twinkling lights and gilded samovars. More than 80 works of art, including pieces by Picasso and Kandinsky, add to the immersive atmosphere.
This year’s holiday menus for Thanksgiving and Christmas will offer Roasted Turkey Breast with chestnut-apple stuffing and whipped Yukon potatoes, Red Borscht, Wild Mushroom Stroganoff, Kulebyaka and Apricot-Glazed Duck. Popular cold-weather staples such as French Onion Soup, Potato Vareniki and house-made Russian dumplings will also return, along with signature dishes including Beef Stroganoff and Chicken Kiev. The restaurant’s seasonal cocktail offerings include the Ivan the Bearable — made with Woodford Reserve Bourbon and cherry bark vanilla — and Raf’s Espresso Martini with Stolichnaya Vanilla and cinnamon syrup. Many choose to pair them with selections from the extensive Champagne list for celebratory gatherings.
The Russian Tea Room’s Afternoon Tea service remains a pre-theatre favorite for visitors heading to Carnegie Hall or Broadway. The menu includes loose-leaf teas, finger sandwiches and house-made pastries, with the option to add Champagne. For a more indulgent option, guests can enjoy a caviar tasting menu accompanied by buckwheat blinis and a flight of Russian vodkas.
Blending history, theatrical flourish and holiday elegance, The Russian Tea Room continues to attract both New Yorkers and travelers looking for a quintessential seasonal dining experience in the city.
