The South Street Seaport Museum will present “How to Read a Poem,” an evening discussion led by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon, on January 7 at its Water Street campus.
The program begins at 5:30 p.m. at 213 Water St. and invites participants to engage with contemporary poems published that same week in leading literary journals and magazines. Tickets are $45, and advance registration is required.
Designed for both seasoned readers and newcomers, the session encourages attendees to explore not only the meanings of individual poems but also the evolving role of poetry as an art form. Poems for discussion will be provided during the program, and no prior poetry experience or preparation is necessary.
Since its launch in 2023, “How to Read a Poem” has been presented at literary festivals and universities worldwide. The Seaport Museum event will take place in the first-floor gallery of the historic A.A. Thomson & Co. building.
Muldoon is the Howard G. B. Clark Professor at Princeton University, where he has taught creative writing, Irish literature, songwriting and translation for nearly four decades. He previously served as Oxford Professor of Poetry from 1999 to 2004 and as Ireland Professor of Poetry from 2022 to 2025.
The poet has published 15 major collections, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning Moy Sand and Gravel and Joy in Service on Rue Tagore, named a New York Times Notable Book of 2024. Muldoon has also edited numerous poetry anthologies, most recently Scanty Plot of Ground: A Book of Sonnets.
