The Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company will present Red Firecrackers, a celebration of Chinese New Year traditions, at Hostos Community College, 450 Grand Concourse, on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 3 p.m. Tickets start at $15.
The performance, created by the late Chinese American choreographer Nai-Ni Chen, brings to life the story of villagers uniting to overcome the Nian, a legendary monster, through dance, acrobatics, music, and colorful costumes. The program explores the origins of Lunar New Year customs while highlighting themes of community, courage and resilience.
The show will feature a range of works, including Lion in the City, a contemporary take on the lion dance integrating hip-hop influences, choreographed by Peiju Chien-Pott with Hip Hop legends Kwikstep and Rokafella. Other pieces include Dai Duet (Peacocks Under the Moonlight), inspired by the Hua Yao Dai ethnic tradition; Mountain Rain in the Tea Garden, evoking the beauty of Taiwanese tea plantations; and Mongolian Harvest, capturing the nomadic Mongolian way of life. The performance also includes student works and the festive Dragon Dance, which symbolizes prosperity, good fortune, and community blessings.
Artistic Director Greta Campo and Executive Director Andy Chiang lead the company, which tours internationally to promote Chinese dance and culture. The program will feature guest musicians from the Chinese Music Ensemble of New York performing traditional instruments such as the pipa, erhu, and dizi.
