South Street Seaport Museum appoints Jody Heher as Chief Operating Officer

Jody Heher

The South Street Seaport Museum has named Jody Heher as its new chief operating officer, effective Jan. 12, bringing more than two decades of museum leadership experience to the organization.

Heher, who holds a master’s degree in visual arts administration from New York University, has built a career in arts administration with senior roles at the Jewish Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Yeshiva University Museum. Her background spans operations, administration and strategic planning, with a focus on building collaborative teams and advancing inclusive museum practices.

“In a museum that increasingly reflects the diverse history and peoples of New York City, we’re pleased to welcome a seasoned museum professional in Jody Heher,” said Jonathan Boulware, president and CEO of the South Street Seaport Museum. “Her deep operational expertise and commitment to thoughtful, inclusive museum practice make her an exceptional addition to our leadership team.”

Boulware said Heher’s ability to balance long-term vision with day-to-day operational needs will support the museum’s expanding programming and partnerships as it continues to tell the story of New York through maritime history, cultural exchange and community engagement.

Heher most recently served as director of program administration at the Jewish Museum, where she oversaw exhibition management, collections management and registration, and long-range exhibition planning. She also managed institutional, exhibition and program budgets exceeding $15 million. Previously, she was general manager for administration, communications and operations in the education department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and associate director for museum administration at the Yeshiva University Museum at the Center for Jewish History.

“I am thrilled to join the dedicated, forward-thinking team at the South Street Seaport Museum,” Heher said. “I’m inspired by the museum’s commitment to preserving history while exploring how our past informs our future, and I look forward to contributing to its hands-on, community-centered approach to learning.”

Heher holds a leadership program certification in executive education from Columbia Business School, a bachelor’s degree in art history from the University of North Carolina, and is a member of the American Exhibition Organizers and the American Alliance of Museums.

With Heher’s appointment, the South Street Seaport Museum said it aims to further strengthen its operations and broaden its efforts to celebrate the waterways, industries and communities that have shaped New York City into one of the world’s most diverse cultural centers.
