South Street Seaport Museum (12 Fulton St, New York, NY 10038) will host its monthly sea chantey sing in a hybrid format on Sunday, Feb. 1, bringing maritime music lovers together both in person and online.

The free event will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. at the museum’s galleries at 12 Fulton St. and simultaneously on Zoom. The chantey sing is held on the first Sunday of every month and moves to a hybrid format during the cooler months.

The program invites participants to sing, lead or listen as traditional sea chanteys and maritime ballads fill the gallery. The songs, once sung by sailors to accompany work aboard ships, reflect centuries of seafaring culture and community.

Preregistration is encouraged for those attending in person, though walk-ins will be accommodated as space allows. In-person attendees may volunteer to lead a song during the round-robin format. Advanced registration is required for Zoom participants, and space for online song leaders is limited.

“Sea chanteys fit in beautifully with the New York tradition,” said Laura Norwitz, the museum’s senior director of program and education. “Sailing ships were a melting pot of languages and cultures, and chanteys and forecastle songs helped sailors merge into one community.”

Norwitz said the tradition continues today as participants sing historic songs alongside updated versions that reflect contemporary life.

Museum admission to historic ships and exhibitions is not included with the chantey sing, though tickets are available separately for visitors who wish to explore additional offerings, including the tall ship Wavertree, the lightship Ambroseand current exhibitions at Pier 16 and Schermerhorn Row.

The South Street Seaport Museum’s chantey sing series preserves the musical traditions of maritime life while fostering a welcoming community for singers and listeners alike.
