Pianist Pedja Mužijević will present Homage to Mixtapes on Friday, Feb. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at Buttenwieser Hall at The Arnhold Center as part of the 92nd Street Y’s Marshall Weinberg Classical Music Season.
The program draws inspiration from the mixtape era of the 1970s, when listeners curated their own musical combinations without algorithms or genre boundaries. Mužijević’s recital blends works spanning more than two centuries, from Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Joseph Haydn to Philip Glass and contemporary composers.
“In the 1970s, cassette players revolutionized how we experienced music at home,” Mužijević said in program notes. “For the first time, we could record, curate and create our own playlists. This is an homage to that time.”
Structured in three “tracks,” each designed to fit on a 60-minute cassette, the program moves from the theatrical style of C.P.E. Bach and Haydn to the playful waltzes of György Ligeti, the lyricism of Amy Beach and the meditative works of Morton Feldman and Glass. The evening also includes a New York premiere of Monday Afternoon from Gregory Spears’ Seven Days.
Mužijević is known for inventive programming and for pairing classical repertoire with modern and experimental works. His career includes performances with major orchestras and solo recitals at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall and The Frick Collection.
Tickets for the Feb. 6 performance start at $45 for in-person attendance and $25 for livestream access.
