The Outsiders, the Tony Award-winning Best Musical adapted from S.E. Hinton’s seminal novel and Francis Ford Coppola’s iconic film, has recouped its full $22 million capitalization on Broadway, producers announced Tuesday.
The milestone was reached during the week ending Dec. 28, 2025, marking a significant financial achievement for the production, which opened at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on April 11, 2024, following its world premiere at La Jolla Playhouse in 2023.
“We’re thrilled by how audiences have embraced and supported The Outsiders,” producers Matthew Rego, Michael Rego, and Hank Unger of The Araca Group said in a joint statement. “It’s been a true honor to bring Susie Hinton’s beloved book to life on stage for longtime fans and new audiences alike.”
Since opening, The Outsiders has played 746 performances and welcomed more than 770,000 audience members from all 50 states and over 75 countries. The production has broken its own house record 10 times and became the first show in the history of the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre to surpass $2 million in gross receipts in a single week.
At the 2024 Tony Awards, The Outsiders earned four honors, including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical for Danya Taymor, Best Lighting Design of a Musical for Hana S. Kim and Brian MacDevitt, and Best Sound Design of a Musical for Cody Spencer.
The musical’s reach has extended beyond the box office. More than 91,000 students have attended performances, including nearly 3,000 through The Stay Gold Project, an education initiative that provides fully subsidized tickets to New York City public school students. Songs from the Grammy-nominated Original Broadway Cast Recording have been streamed more than 85 million times.
A North American tour opened in October 2025 at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the setting of the story, and is currently playing across the United States and Canada. Additional productions are planned for London’s West End, Asia, and Australia, with details to be announced.
Set in Tulsa in 1967, The Outsiders follows Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and their Greaser family as they navigate loyalty, identity, and class conflict while clashing with their affluent rivals, the Socs. The musical features a book by Adam Rapp and Justin Levine, music and lyrics by Jamestown Revival and Levine, and choreography by Rick Kuperman and Jeff Kuperman.
