The CUNY Dance Initiative has announced upcoming performances of UN-spoken, the first full-length contemporary dance work by choreographer Elodie Dufroux, set for April 3 and 4 at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center (199 Chambers St, New York, NY 10007).
The performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the venue, located at 199 Chambers St. General admission tickets are $40, with student tickets available for $30.
UN-spoken is described as a deeply personal work that examines the lasting impact of bullying and social ostracization through Dufroux’s lived experiences. The piece blends physical movement with narrative elements to explore themes of emotional trauma, resilience, and identity.
In a statement, Dufroux said the work was inspired by her childhood experiences of being bullied because her parents were married in a community where many families were fractured, as well as cruel remarks directed at her father’s disability. She said those experiences shaped her understanding of how insecurity and rigid ideas about worth and strength can fuel exclusion and harm.
The production features original spoken-word texts written and recorded by Devin Kozlosky. The sound design combines contemporary mainstream music with cinematic and neo-classical compositions.
The work will be performed by Victoria Amado, Dufroux, Rosalind (Roz) Hsu, and Hara Zi.
Born in Loudun, France, Dufroux works across live performance, commercial, and theatrical projects. She has collaborated with choreographers including Jon Rua of Hamilton, Luis Salgado, and Carlos Neto of Atlantic Records. Her recent credits include performing at the Telemundo Upfront at the Ziegfeld Theatre and appearing as a dancer during the 2019–2020 New Year’s Eve performance by Phish at Madison Square Garden.
The CUNY Dance Initiative provides creative residencies for New York City choreographers and dance companies on CUNY college campuses, supporting the development and presentation of new dance works across the city.
