The CUNY Dance Initiative will present the New York premiere of Rising, an evening-length collaboration by Pigeonwing Dance and the GRAMMY®–nominated Neave Trio, April 23–25 at 7 p.m. at the Baruch Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $35, or $20 for CUNY students, and are available online.
Choreographed by Gabrielle Lamb, Rising explores humanity’s relationship with the world’s oceans through movement set to live music composed by Robert Sirota and performed by the Neave Trio. The performance incorporates recorded text from oceanographer Curtis Ebbesmeyer and naturalist Craig Foster to examine climate change and rising sea levels.
“Dances about water are among the oldest forms of human expression,” said Lamb. “Rising speaks to both the beauty and fragility of our oceans, uniting music and movement to create a shared experience of wonder and reflection.”
Pigeonwing Dance, founded in 2016 and described by The New Yorker as “eccentric…playful…curious,” has been presented at venues including New York City Center, 92Y, Jacob’s Pillow, and the New York Botanical Garden. The Neave Trio, comprising violinist Anna Williams, cellist Mikhail Veselov, and pianist Eri Nakamura, has earned two GRAMMY® nominations and is celebrated for its innovative collaborations across genres.
The work, which premiered in 2024 at Oregon State University, was developed over three years with the musicians and dancers shaping its vision. The program runs approximately 60 minutes with no intermission.
Rising is presented as part of the CUNY Dance Initiative, which supports choreographers and dance companies with creative residencies on CUNY campuses, fostering the development of new works and cross-disciplinary collaborations.
