La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club will present Uncle Vanya, scenes from country life, a new production by Krymov Lab NYC, from March 28 through April 12 at the Ellen Stewart Theatre in Manhattan’s East Village.
The production, written and directed by Dmitry Krymov, marks the acclaimed theatermaker’s first staging inspired by Anton Chekhov’s classic play Uncle Vanya. Performances will take place at the theater located at 66 E. 4th St.
Tickets are priced at $60 for general admission and $45 for students and seniors. Student and senior rush tickets are available for $30 at the door, subject to availability.
Krymov’s interpretation transforms Chekhov’s work into what the company describes as a “grotesque elegy” and “wasteland vaudeville,” reflecting contemporary themes of despair, longing, and helplessness.
“In a world poised on the brink of collapse, people stand powerless — unable to act, unable to choose — left only with the fragile right to laugh and weep at the absurdity of their own helplessness,” Krymov said in a statement.
The production is created by Krymov Lab NYC, an international collective of actors, designers, musicians, and puppeteers led by Krymov and based at La MaMa as a resident company. The ensemble focuses on visually driven theater that blends visual art, music, literature and popular culture.
Krymov, known for a design-centered style sometimes described as “theatre of the artist,” has gained international recognition for reimagining classic works through visually layered staging and inventive use of props and scenery. He has received numerous honors, including five Golden Mask Awards, four Crystal Turandot Awards, and a Herald Angel Awardfrom the Edinburgh International Festival.
The production features a cast including Amen Igbinosun, MaryKate Glenn, Anya Zicer, Colin Buckingham, Jackson Scott, Javier Molina, Natalie Battistone, Shelby Flannery, Tim Eliot, and Zach Fike Hodges.
The creative team includes producer, interpreter and casting director Tatyana Khaikin; producer Tim Eliot; production designer Emona Stoykova; lighting designer Krista Smith; costume designer Luna Gomberg; puppet designer Leah Ogawa; projection designer Yana Biryukova; sound designer Denis Zabikaya; dramaturg Shari Perkins; production manager Zach Jenkins; technical director Calan Britz; stage manager Patrick Dunning; and assistant stage manager Kate Willard.
