Mark Ballas will return to Broadway next month for a four-week limited engagement in the long-running musical Chicago.
The “Dancing with the Stars” champion will take on the role of slick defense attorney Billy Flynn from April 6 through May 3 at the Ambassador Theatre (219 W 49th St, New York, NY 10019).
Ballas will join Whitney Leavitt, who recently extended her run as Roxie Hart through May 3 after joining the Broadway company Feb. 2. The pair previously appeared together as semifinalists on Dancing with the Stars.
Leavitt, an actress and performer known for her appearance on the Hulu series The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, is making her Broadway debut in the role. Her run in the production has reportedly helped drive strong box office sales at the Ambassador Theatre.
Ballas, an 11-time finalist and three-time champion on “Dancing with the Stars,” is also an Emmy-nominated choreographer, singer-songwriter, and actor. He previously appeared on Broadway as Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys and later starred as Charlie Price in Kinky Boots.
First staged on Broadway in 1975 with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Ebb and Bob Fosse, “Chicago” is the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. The current revival, produced by Barry Weissler and Fran Weissler, won six Tony Awards in 1997, including best musical revival.
Set in the roaring 1920s, the show follows Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her lover and manipulates the media and public opinion with the help of a charismatic lawyer to escape conviction.
Performances of “Chicago” are currently scheduled eight times a week at the Ambassador Theatre, with tickets available through the production’s official website and box office.
