Classic Stage Company will present a one-night-only benefit reading of Jane Chambers’ groundbreaking play Last Summer at Bluefish Cove on Monday, March 23 at 7 p.m. at the CSC’s Lynn F. Angelson Theater (136 E 13th St, New York, NY 10003). The reading will be directed by Emmy and Tony Award winner Cynthia Nixon.
The production features an ensemble cast including Molly Bernard, Rachel Crowl, Moses Ingram, Louisa Jacobson, Hari Nef, Dascha Polanco, Sarin Monae West, and Amalia Yoo. Last Summer at Bluefish Cove, which premiered Off-Broadway in 1980, depicts the lives and relationships of eight queer women during a transformative summer at a lesbian beach enclave.
CSC’s Producing Artistic Director Jill Rafson called the play “a landmark achievement, putting positive portrayals of queer women on stage in a time when that was hardly the norm.” Nixon added that the characters remain “vibrant, funny and wonderfully three-dimensional” for contemporary audiences.
