The Broadway musical adaptation of Schmigadoon! has officially begun rehearsals, welcoming Maulik Pancholy to the company as The Reverend.
The cast gathered this week at New 42 Studios in New York City to begin preparations for the new musical, based on the award-winning Apple Original series from Universal Television. Pancholy, best known for his role as Jonathan on 30 Rock, will play the mild-mannered religious leader of the whimsical town at the center of the show.
The production will begin previews on April 4 at the Nederlander Theatre (208 W 41st St, New York, NY 10036), with opening night scheduled for April 20. The limited engagement is slated to run through Sept. 6.
The musical stars Alex Brightman and Sara Chase as Josh Skinner and Melissa Gimble, a pair of New York doctors who embark on a couples’ backpacking retreat to rekindle their relationship. Instead, they stumble upon Schmigadoon, a magical town where life unfolds like a classic Golden Age musical. The townspeople constantly burst into song, the bridge out of town leads nowhere, and the only way for the pair to escape is by discovering true love.
The cast also includes Ana Gasteyer, an alum of Saturday Night Live, as Mildred Layton, the Reverend’s morally superior wife who keeps a close eye on everyone in town.
Ann Harada reprises her role from the television series as Florence Menlove, the devoted but oblivious wife of Mayor Menlove, played by Tony Award nominee Brad Oscar. The mayor warmly welcomes newcomers while harboring a secret — and a song — in his heart.
Additional cast members include Isabelle McCalla as Emma Tate, the town’s teacher who struggles to fit into Schmigadoon’s rigid expectations, and Ivan Hernandez as Doc, the town’s handsome physician with a frosty demeanor.
The production will also feature Max Clayton as Danny Bailey, the town’s rebellious bad boy, and McKenzie Kurtz as Betsy, a farmer’s daughter who quickly falls for Josh. Newcomer Ayaan Diop will make his Broadway debut as Carson.
The musical comes from Lorne Michaels and features a book and Emmy Award–winning score by Cinco Paul. Direction and choreography are by Tony Award winner Christopher Gattelli.
The creative team also includes orchestrators Doug Besterman and Mike Morris, music supervisor and arranger David Chase, music director Steven Malone, scenic designer Scott Pask, costume designer Linda Cho, lighting designer Donald Holder, sound designer Walter Trarbach, hair and wig designer Tom Watson, and makeup designer Ashley Ryan.
