American Museum of Natural History to open ‘For the Win’ exhibition highlighting iconic sports achievements

New York City FC celebrates its 2021 MLS Cup championship, lifting the Philip F. Anschutz Trophy—Major League Soccer’s highest honor. The trophy will be on display in For the Win: Objects of Sports Excellence.

The American Museum of Natural History (200 Central Prk W, New York, NY 10024) will debut For the Win: Objects of Sports Excellence on May 15, a special exhibition showcasing championship rings, trophies, medals, and jewelry from legendary athletes and teams. The exhibition will be displayed in the Melissa and Keith Meister Gallery, within the Museum’s halls of gems and minerals.

Spanning nearly 150 years, the exhibit highlights objects such as one of Jesse Owens’s 1936 Olympic gold medals, Breanna Stewart’s 2024 WNBA Championship ring, and the Vince Lombardi Trophy. It explores the evolution of sports prizes alongside modern sports culture and opens ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026™, kicking off the Museum’s World Cup, World Cultures: Celebrating the Community and Science of Sport programming.

“For The Win brings together an extraordinary collection of objects that commemorate the defining moment of victory in sports, meticulously crafted from spectacular gems and minerals,” said Museum President Sean M. Decatur.

The exhibition is curated by Vikki Tobak, with Rich Kleiman as senior advisor. It features over 70 objects across more than 15 sports, including basketball, soccer, tennis, football, boxing, and golf. Highlights include Ali Krieger’s 2019 Women’s World Cup medal, Kevin Durant’s 2017 NBA Championship ring, Olympic torches, MLS and NWSL trophies, and awards honoring athletes such as Katie Ledecky and Claressa Shields.

“For the Win invites us to look closer at the things we’ve made to honor greatness, and what we find is the story of modern sports itself,” Tobak said.

The exhibition will be included with general admission and is produced by the Museum’s Exhibition Department. Following its opening, the Museum will debut interactive soccer activities, media installations, and educational programs celebrating the global and scientific aspects of sports. Full details on the World Cup, World Cultures series will be available at amnh.org.
