Pianist and composer Kimball Gallagher will return to Carnegie Hall for his first solo appearance there in more than a decade with a program titled “New Perceptions, New Worlds.”
The performance will take place on April 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the venue’s Zankel Hall and will feature world and U.S. premieres alongside works from the classical repertoire.
Gallagher, who was raised in Boston and trained at Rice University and The Juilliard School, initially pursued a traditional path as a concert pianist before expanding his work beyond the conventional recital stage. Early in his career, he began presenting salon-style concerts focused on intimate audience connections rather than formal concert settings.
That approach later evolved into an ambitious project — an 88-concert tour across seven continents, funded by 88 supporters who each sponsored a key of the piano. The journey exposed Gallagher to communities around the world and ultimately reshaped his artistic direction.
The Carnegie Hall program reflects those global experiences, pairing established works with contemporary compositions influenced by diverse musical traditions.
The evening will include the world premiere of “Trois Études Africaines” by Hwaen Ch’uqi, inspired by North African Gnawa traditions, West African musical forms, and Ethiopian jazz. The program also features the U.S. premiere of “Lugalay” by Simon Fink, which blends Burmese and American lullabies.
Gallagher will also perform selections from his own “Selected Preludes,” short works reflecting places that have shaped his life and musical outlook.

Additional repertoire includes “Estampes” by Claude Debussy and Piano Sonata No. 3 by Johannes Brahms.
Joining Gallagher on stage will be guest artists Ulrich H. Brunnhuber on saxophone, Abigail Fischer on soprano, singer Ah Moon, and Burmese harpist Pa Pa Htay.
Gallagher’s work outside the concert hall includes founding the nonprofit 88 International in 2015. The organization uses music education and performance to support youth leadership and civic engagement and has reached more than 200,000 students worldwide.
One of its flagship initiatives, Tunisia88, established student-led music clubs in all 592 public high schools in Tunisia, allowing students to compose music, organize concerts, and lead creative programs within their communities.
Gallagher’s return to Carnegie Hall, organizers say, reflects both his artistic evolution and the global experiences that have shaped his work over nearly two decades.
