The inaugural Coney Island Student Film Festival will take place on March 21 at 7 p.m., showcasing the work of students from the newly established Coney Island Film School. The festival will include screenings of student films as well as question-and-answer sessions with the directors.
The event will be led by Dylan Mars Greenberg, the school’s lead teacher and a cult filmmaker whose work has appeared at the Museum of the Moving Image and on outlets including Rolling Stone and NPR. Greenberg founded the Coney Island Film School in partnership with nonprofit Coney Island USA to teach her experimental filmmaking techniques to both aspiring and established artists in New York City.
“People taking this class come from all walks of life,” Greenberg said. “We have people who have been making films for years and want to learn a different approach, and people who have never made a film in their lives. Everyone has made such a diverse array of films. It’s exciting seeing the work take shape.”
Students at the school are immersed in filmmaking from day one. “The very first day, I make a film that I direct and cast every student as an actor,” Greenberg explained. “The next week, they see the edited film and we discuss it. My goal is that the learning doesn’t end in the classroom — all of my students will go on to make films of their own.”
