Critically endangered African penguin chick debuts at New York Aquarium

A critically endangered African penguin chick has made its public debut at the New York Aquarium, joining a colony of 37 penguins at the facility’s Sea Cliffs habitat.

The male chick hatched on Dec. 4, weighing 63.2 grams. After three months of monitored growth and development, the juvenile now weighs approximately 3.4 kilograms.

Aquarium animal keepers tracked the chick’s progress through several key benchmarks, including a target 20% daily weight gain and the transition from soft down to waterproof feathers. The juvenile has also begun demonstrating the social, swimming, and hopping behaviors necessary to integrate with the larger colony.

The hatching marks the 19th successful birth of an African penguin at New York Aquarium. The breeding program is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP) under the Saving Animals From Extinction (SAFE) program.

The SAFE program is a collective effort involving more than 50 accredited zoos and aquariums aimed at preventing the extinction of the species. Since 2005, the African penguin SSP population has grown by 47% while maintaining 98% genetic diversity.

The African penguin is a flightless bird endemic to the coasts of South Africa and Namibia. One of the smallest penguin species in the world, it is currently listed as critically endangered by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Wild populations have declined by 75% over the last 20 years, driven by habitat loss, human disturbance, and a scarcity of prey fish. Experts estimate that only 9,900 breeding pairs remain in the wild.
