Kizuna Dance to showcase Japanese-inspired contemporary works at John Jay College

Kizuna Dance will present a career-spanning repertory concert at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater on May 2, featuring the New York City premiere of a new international collaboration inspired by Japanese culture.

The performance, hosted by the CUNY Dance Initiative, highlights the work of Artistic Director Cameron McKinney, whose choreography blends contemporary floorwork with street dance styles. The program serves as a retrospective of the company’s 12-year history and its ongoing mission to connect American and Japanese aesthetics.

A centerpiece of the evening is the local debut of “SAFE HARBOR,” a 2024 collaboration between McKinney and Japanese choreographer Toru Shimazaki. The work was developed in Japan through a residency supported by the United States-Japan Friendship Commission.

The program also includes “BREAD AND CIRCUS,” a hyperphysical exploration of dreams inspired by the visual art of Oscar Oiwa and Tomokazu Matsuyama, and “E.X.P.L.O.D.E,” a dramatic solo created to mark the 30th anniversary of the landmark animated film AKIRA.

“Kizuna Dance uses movement as a medium to bridge cultures,” McKinney said. The ensemble has performed internationally at venues such as the Japan Society and the International Choreographic Festival of Blois in France.

The CUNY Dance Initiative, which is sponsoring the event, provides New York City choreographers with creative residencies and performance space on CUNY campuses. Beyond the stage, Kizuna Dance maintains a commitment to community outreach, including an annual “Open Intensive” program that provides free training to 150 New York City artists each year.

The performance is scheduled for 7 p.m. at John Jay College, located at 524 West 59th St. Click here to purchase tickets.
