Renowned British cellist Steven Isserlis will reunite with longtime collaborator and pianist Connie Shih for a performance at the 92nd Street Y on April 18.
The concert, part of the Marshall Weinberg Classical Music Season, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on the David Geffen Stage at Kaufmann Concert Hall. The program features a selection of works by Beethoven, Schumann, and Kabalevsky, highlighting the duo’s career-long partnership.
Isserlis, a CBE recipient and celebrated soloist, is known for his diverse repertoire ranging from period-instrument performances to world premieres. For the upcoming New York engagement, the duo will perform Beethoven’s “12 Variations on a Theme from The Magic Flute” and Cello Sonata No. 3 in A Major. Isserlis has described the latter as a work “suffused with joy and love of life.”
The program also includes Robert Schumann’s “Fantasiestücke,” Dmitry Kabalevsky’s Cello Sonata in B-flat Major, and Vítězslava Kaprálová’s “Deux ritournelles pour violincelle et piano.”
Shih, a Canadian pianist and professor at the Salzburg Mozarteum, has performed as a soloist with major orchestras globally. She was the youngest protégé of mentor György Sebök and has received international acclaim for her sensitivity as a chamber musician.
Isserlis will perform on the 1726 “Marquis de Corberon” Stradivarius, on loan from the Royal Academy of Music. Beyond his performance career, Isserlis is an established author of musical commentaries and children’s books, as well as a broadcaster for the BBC.
Tickets for the performance start at $45 for in-person attendance and $25 for streaming access.
