Mimi Garrard to showcase award-winning video dances at Rubin Museum

Mimi Garrard Dance Theatre and Collaborators will present “Views,” a program featuring six award-winning video dances, on Saturday, May 2, at the Theater of the Rubin Museum.

The 2 p.m. performance will showcase a range of choreography and digital storytelling techniques. The program includes “Mother of Exiles,” a piece based on Emma Lazarus’ poem “The New Colossus,” and “Non-Human Gestalt.” Other featured works include “Dystutopic,” which explores the contrast between utopia and dystopia; “Innerspace”; the high-energy “Hastebound”; and the poetic work “Peacock.”

Garrard has received more than 1,700 awards from international film festivals for her video dances, including over 1,600 first-place honors within the last three years. Recent accolades include wins for “Dystutopic” at festivals in Belgrade and Barcelona, and “Non-Human Gestalt” at the Hollywood Gold Awards, Paris Film Awards, and Milan Gold Awards. Her work has been screened globally on the BBC Big Screen in England and the planetarium dome in Jackson, Mississippi.

The production features dancers Tim Bendernagel, Kate Jewett, Cynthia Koppe, and Samuel Roberts. The works are composed by Garrard, Tom Hamilton, and Joao Castro Pinto, with costumes designed by Mindy Nelson. Garrard’s recent work focuses on digital techniques to transform dance material, an experimental vision that has been featured at more than 2,500 festivals worldwide.
