International storyteller and rock artist Lily Vakili will host a special EP release show at the Francis Kite Club on May 6, ahead of the May 8 launch of her new live-in-studio project, Live Wire.
The New York-based artist recorded the six-song EP at Second Take Sound in NYC, seeking to capture the “electric” performance style that has defined her recent tours. Partnering with producer Reed Turchi, Vakili and her band—guitarist Eric Burns, drummer Joseph Yount, and bassist Drew Hart—opted for an intimate, room-recorded sound reminiscent of “From The Basement” sessions.
“The timing felt right because she’d just come off touring with the same group of musicians,” Vakili said of the recording process. “The old songs are longtime companions… playing them out with my band on the Oceans of Kansas tour was revelatory.”
The EP bridges Vakili’s past and present, opening with “Lake City Blues”—one of the first songs she ever wrote—and closing with “I’ve Been Hiding,” a retelling of the Jimi Hendrix classic “Hey Joe” from a woman’s perspective. Between those tracks, Vakili explores themes ranging from social protest in “Had A Penny” to the vulnerability of a new romance in the focus track “Anybody Knows.”
Vakili, who was born in Honduras and raised across several continents, credits her global upbringing for her genre-blending sound of blues, rock, and art rock. “I spent many of my formative years in Latin American and Caribbean cultures in which music was intrinsic to the everyday,” she recalled.
