The South Street Seaport Museum has announced a special program, “The Women of Coenties Slip: Art, Connection, and Place,” featuring the premiere of three short documentaries on Saturday, May 9.

The event, which begins at 3:30 p.m. at 213 Water St., highlights the lives and legacies of pioneering artists Agnes Martin, Lenore Tawney, and Chryssa. The featured On This Spot documentaries explore how these women shaped a vibrant artistic hub in Lower Manhattan during the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Inhabiting former maritime warehouses near the current Seaport Museum, these artists established a creative community defined by a shared spirit of independence. Martin, a proto-minimalist painter, lived in an un-permitted loft at 3–5 Coenties Slip, while Tawney operated a disciplined weaving practice at 27 South Street. Chryssa, a Greek-born artist, was deeply embedded in the tight-knit community despite not residing at the Slip.

“Their personal and artistic lives were inseparable from the place they inhabited, capturing the quiet, transformative power of Coenties Slip,” the museum stated.

The screenings will be followed by discussions with scholars, including Prudence Peiffer, author of The Slip: The New York City Street That Changed American Art Forever; Kalliopi Minioudaki, contributor to Chryssa & New York; and Kathleen Nugent Mangan, director of the Lenore G. Tawney Foundation.

The event is free to the public, though advanced registration is suggested. Tickets are available through the South Street Seaport Museum website.
