Voices of Ascension has announced its 2026–2027 season in New York City, titled The Radiant Depths. The 37th season brings together a wide range of choral works spanning Renaissance compositions, contemporary music, and major classical masterworks.
The season opens on October 29, 2026 with “War & Requiem” at the Church of the Ascension in Manhattan. The program pairs Haydn’s Mass in Time of War with Fauré’s Requiem, setting the tone for a season focused on themes of conflict, reflection, and resolution.
The annual Candlelight Christmas Concerts return with performances scheduled for December 9, 10, 14, and 15, 2026. The series will feature seasonal choral works performed in the candlelit setting of the Church of the Ascension.
On January 7, 2027, the ensemble presents “Sound Out of Silence,” featuring organist James McVinnie. The program includes works by Pérotin, Nico Muhly, and Tristan Perich, alongside a world premiere commission by Muhly titled Nativity Cycle.
The season continues with “Requiem Aeternam” on February 17, 2027, led by guest conductor Kathy Saltzman Romey. The program includes works by Brahms, Distler, Nystedt, and Howells, presented in a semi-theatrical format inside the church.
On March 11, 2027, Voices of Ascension presents “Sing Joyfully,” focusing on music by Thomas Tallis and William Byrd. The program highlights choral works from the English Renaissance.
The season concludes on April 18, 2027 with Bach’s Mass in B Minor, performed by the Voices of Ascension Chorus and Orchestra.
The organization also announced the launch of its new “Choral Visionaries Initiative,” a collaboration with contemporary choral leaders designed to bring new artistic perspectives into future programming.
Voices of Ascension Executive Director Jonathan Bradley said the season explores the range of choral music from historical works to contemporary compositions, with a focus on themes of mortality, transcendence, and human connection.
The season spans works by Haydn, Fauré, Bach, Brahms, Distler, Howells, Tallis, Byrd, Pérotin, Nico Muhly, and others, reflecting both historical depth and new creative direction within the ensemble’s programming.
