The South Street Seaport Museum has announced an upcoming public program titled Parade of Ships From George Washington to Sail4th 250. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. at the museum space located at 213 Water Street.
The lecture examines the history of civic gatherings and military events in New York Harbor from the late 18th century through the present day. Former Manhattan Borough Historian Robert Snyder will lead the opening presentation, focusing on trade disputes, the Caribbean shipping network, and the naval strategies utilized during the American Revolution.
Museum Director of Collections and Exhibitions Martina Caruso will present the second portion of the program, drawing from archival photographs and documentation. Her segment reviews major local harbor events, including the 1789 arrival of George Washington and the subsequent Operation Sail gatherings held in 1964, 1976, and 1986.
The evening schedule also includes a screening of recently digitized archival video footage documenting the 1976 Bicentennial Operation Sail parade. Following the individual presentations, the speakers will participate in a moderated panel discussion and an audience question-and-answer session regarding local maritime heritage.
Admission to the event is free, though the organizers encourage attendees to complete online preregistration to secure entry. Ticket holders will receive early access to the galleries from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. to view an exhibition featuring rare historical documents and a commemorative engraving of Washington’s historic boat parade.
