Mint Theater Company has announced the complete cast and creative team for the New York premiere of Phyl, a comedy written by British playwright and suffragist Cecily Hamilton. Directed by Britt Berke, performances begin October 3, 2026, with an official opening on October 22 at Theatre Row, located at 410 West 42nd Street in Manhattan.
The play centers on Phyllis Chester, a governess living in isolation who risks everything after losing her temper. Originally scheduled to premiere in Oxford, the production was banned by the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University despite passing official censorship reviews without required changes, ultimately making its debut in Manchester instead.
Lily Ganser stars in the title role as Phyllis “Phyl” Chester, making her Off-Broadway debut. The cast also features Tessa Bilmes, Jennifer Blood, Curzon Dobell, Katie Firth, Livvy Marcus, Anthony Michael Martinez, Talia Sulla, and Charlotte Van Ledtje.
The production team includes scenic designer Brittany Vasta, costume designer Alicia J. Austin, lighting designer Mary Louise Geiger, and sound designer Jane Shaw. Additional creative team members include Chris Fields for properties, Amy Stoller for dramaturgy and dialect design, casting director Stephanie Klapper, production manager Mitch Strong, and production stage manager Jeff Meyers.
Director Britt Berke returns to Mint Theater Company after previously directing Becomes a Woman, which earned an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play. The current revival launches Mint’s new season exploring relationships, sex, and marriage, which will continue in February 2027 with Miles Malleson’s The Fanatics.
Performances of Phyl run through November 7, 2026. Ticket prices start at $39 and can be purchased online, by phone, or at the Theatre Row box office. The season is dedicated to the memory of longtime press agent David Gersten.
