The South Street Seaport Museum has announced a free public program examining the historical transformation and future development of Brooklyn’s working waterfront. The event takes place on Sept. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at 213 Water Street.
The program starts with a presentation by Dan Wiley, District Director for Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez. The presentation will address how changing industries, maritime commerce, environmental challenges, and community advocacy have impacted the borough’s shoreline over the past century.
Following the opening presentation, a panel of waterfront experts, urban planners, and advocates will participate in a moderated discussion. The panelists will focus on how government policies, financial investments, and regional partnerships continue to shape the local maritime environment.
The discussion will explore methods for balancing industrial operations on the waterfront with climate resilience, public access, environmental restoration, and economic growth. Panelists will draw from backgrounds in economic development, government, environmental leadership, and maritime transportation.
The evening concludes with an interactive question-and-answer session with the audience, followed by a reception. The event is hosted by the museum alongside the Waterfront Alliance, Resilient Red Hook, and the Environment and Waterfront Committees of the American Planning Association NY Metro Chapter.
