A new neighborhood Mexican steakhouse is set to open in Manhattan’s Flatiron District. Norte opens Oct. 29 at 39 West 19th St., inside a restored 1910 landmark building. It is the second New York City restaurant from restaurateur Alberto Martínez, following Cuerno New York at Rockefeller Center, which opened in 2025.
The restaurant draws on the asador de barrio, the northern Mexican tradition of gathering around carne asada and live-fire grilling. A Josper charcoal oven anchors the kitchen, where USDA Prime steaks and other dishes are cooked over natural charcoal. Martínez said Norte is meant to honor the way Mexican cooks have shaped New York dining, bringing northern Mexican cooking “to the heart of the city.”
Executive Chef Oriol Mendívil and Chef of Culinary Innovation Jaime Cavazos lead the kitchen. The menu follows the progression of a northern Mexican meal, from botanas and tacos to vegetables, carne asada, house specialties and sides. Dishes include tacos de trompo, a Rib Eye con Tuétano with roasted bone marrow, and a tableside chicharrón cart. The French Dip de Barbacoa, made with beef cheek and tongue slow-cooked for 12 hours, is limited to 12 orders each night.
Bar de Mar, a dedicated raw bar and seafood menu, offers tostadas, aguachiles, ceviches and fresh oysters, with some dishes finished over the fire. The beverage program includes a trio of margaritas, tequila, mezcal, sotol and raicilla, and a wine list with more than 40 Mexican labels across eight winemaking states. The beer list pairs New York craft brews with Mexican staples such as Carta Blanca and Tecate.
Mexican firm A de Arquitectos designed the 150-seat space, which features distressed brick, aged timber, metallic ceilings and antique furnishings. It includes a 16-seat central bar, a Bar de Mar chef’s counter and a private dining room. Music curated by Rulo moves from ambient soul-jazz early in the evening to a more energetic tempo after 10 p.m.
Norte will be open nightly for dinner, Sunday through Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to midnight. Reservations are available through Resy, and walk-ins are welcome. More information is available at nortenyc.com.
