The 92nd Street Y, New York (92NY) will present a landmark performance by world-renowned pianist Angela Hewitt, celebrating the 50th anniversary of one of her signature works, Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Widely regarded as one of the foremost interpreters of Bach’s music, Hewitt returns to 92NY for this special anniversary performance. Her previous New York recital of the Goldberg Variations sold out, reflecting her international acclaim and loyal following. Hewitt’s four-year Bach Odyssey cycle and her award-winning recordings of Bach’s keyboard works have established her as a singular voice in the interpretation of the composer’s music. The Sunday Times has praised her Bach cycle as “one of the record glories of our age,” and the Goldberg Variations remain the ultimate showcase of her artistry and precision.
Hewitt occupies a unique place in the world of classical music, performing an expansive repertoire across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. In addition to her work as a soloist, she frequently appears with major orchestras and is in demand as a play-conductor.
In March 2024, she launched her latest major endeavor, The Mozart Odyssey, performing the complete piano concertos across 13 countries with renowned orchestras including the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, Brussels Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Warsaw Philharmonic, and Montreal Symphony, among many others. This ambitious project follows her highly acclaimed Bach Odyssey (2016–2022), a global cycle of the complete keyboard works performed in 12 recitals.
Hewitt’s discography further cements her legacy. Her award-winning cycle of Bach’s keyboard works for Hyperion Records remains a benchmark, while her more recent focus on Mozart includes three volumes of piano sonatas released between 2022 and 2025. In 2023, Universal Music Group’s acquisition of Hyperion brought her entire catalogue to streaming platforms, including her Diapason d’Or–winning recording of the Goldberg Variations, reissued on vinyl in 2024.
Born into a musical family, Hewitt’s prodigious career began early. She started piano studies at age three, performed in public at four, and won her first scholarship at five. In 1985 she won the Toronto International Bach Piano Competition, launching her international career. Among her many honors are her appointment as a Companion of the Order of Canada (2015), an OBE from Queen Elizabeth II (2006), and the Wigmore Medal (2020) for her contributions to music. She is also the founder of the Trasimeno Music Festival in Umbria, Italy, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2025.
With a career that bridges scholarship, performance, and recording at the highest level, Angela Hewitt continues to captivate audiences worldwide. Her return to 92NY for the Goldberg Variations promises an unforgettable evening, marking both a personal and artistic milestone.
