Broadway performers join studio cast for new musical based on the life of Alan Turing

Writers Timothy L. Michuda and Benjamin Ward have announced the upcoming release of a concept EP for their new biographical musical, TURING. The six-song project narrates the life of Alan Turing, the historic mathematician and wartime codebreaker. The tracking explores his scientific work alongside the personal challenges of living as a gay man during a historical period when homosexuality was criminalized.

The studio cast features several veteran performers from Broadway and West End productions. The lineup includes Vincent Jamal Hooper, who recently completed a run as Simba in The Lion King on Broadway, and James Olivas from the West End revival of EVITA. Mason Olshavsky, currently appearing in The Lost Boys on Broadway, reprises his role as the youngest version of Turing alongside UK performers Jacob Fowler and Aiden Carson.

The narrative of the musical unfolds in a non-linear format across three specific periods in Turing’s life, focusing on his relationships at ages 16, 28, and 40. Michuda and Ward collaboratively wrote the book, music, and lyrics for the project. The songs are structured to depict moments of personal discovery and heartbreak against the social laws of the era.

The TURING musical previously completed a fully staged premiere at the Greenhouse Theater Center in Chicago under DePaul University’s Blue Demon Theatre. The show also received the awards for Best Musical and Best Lyrics out of 18 featured entries at the 2024 Theatre on the Verge New Musicals Festival. Michuda, a violinist and composer, collaborated on the orchestration with Ward, a London-based music director and supervisor.

The new concept album will be distributed progressively on major digital streaming platforms over the next few months. Listeners can currently access a pre-save link online for the single track titled “Amongst the Stars.” Following the studio rollout of the complete six-song tracklist, the writers plan to explore future possibilities for live regional performances and a full theatrical production.
