Cherry Lane Theatre has announced its upcoming summer programming slate, featuring a mix of live theater, anniversary performances, and special film screenings. The lineup includes the North American debut of a critically acclaimed play alongside community-focused arts events.

On Friday, June 19, the Brooklyn-born artist collective The Circle will celebrate its two-year anniversary at the theater with a special Juneteenth performance. The collective relies on improvisation and community collaboration, blending elements of R&B, hip-hop, gospel, rock, folk, and jazz. For this specific show, the artists will create music in real time based on a randomly selected prompt. The network of creatives has previously received coverage from NPR’s Tiny Desk, The New York Times, and The FADER.

The theater will also host a special screening on Saturday, June 20, to celebrate the Midsommar holiday. Attendees can view the director’s cut of the critically acclaimed A24 film Midsommar.

Later in the summer, Cherry Lane Theatre will host the North American debut of Shifters, a play written by Olivier Award nominee Benedict Lombe. The production stars Heather Agyepong, who earned an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actress for her role as Des. She performs alongside Daniel Ezra, known for his work in All American.

BAFTA nominee and Evening Standard Theatre Award winner Lynette Linton directs the production. Previews for Shifters are scheduled to begin on July 6, with the official opening night set for July 15.

The summer schedule follows the theater’s recent partnership with McNally Jackson Books for its inaugural BOOKTALK event. The live discussion featured author Madeline Cash and singer-songwriter Audrey Hobert. The ongoing event series pairs authors with inspiring artists to discuss creativity and the artistic process. Recordings of the events are published to the theater’s YouTube channel.

Cherry Lane Theatre also recently concluded its run of You Got Older, an Off-Broadway revival written by Pulitzer Prize finalist Clare Barron and directed by Anne Kauffman. The production received a Critic’s Pick designation from The New York Times and was extended three times because of ticket demand.
