Classic Stage Company (136 E 13th St, New York, NY 10003) has announced casting for the New York premiere of The Emporium, the final play by Pulitzer Prize-winning dramatist Thornton Wilder, adapted and completed by playwright Kirk Lynn and directed by Rob Melrose.
Previews begin April 30, with opening night set for May 18. The limited engagement runs through June 7 at CSC’s Lynn F. Angelson Theater in Manhattan.
The production will feature Candy Buckley, Mahira Kakkar, Eva Kaminsky, Patrick Kerr, Derek Smith, Joe Tapper, and Cassia Thompson.
More than 75 years in the making, The Emporium marks the completion of an unfinished manuscript by Wilder, one of America’s most celebrated playwrights. The play follows a young man’s journey through a cityscape and beyond, exploring themes of wonder, purpose, and the search for meaning. The work is presented as a long-unseen final chapter in Wilder’s theatrical legacy.
Lynn, known for Lipstick Traces, completed the play, while Melrose, whose credits include Born with Teeth, directs.
The creative team includes scenic designer Walt Spangler, costume designer Alejo Vietti, lighting designer Cat Tate Starmer, and sound designer Darron L. West. Casting is by Stephanie Yankwitt, CSA.
Tickets are currently available to CSC patrons contributing $1,000 or more. Individual tickets go on sale March 5. The company is also offering a 2-Play FlexPass, allowing audiences to see The Emporium and Marcel on the Train at a discounted rate.
Founded in 1967, Classic Stage Company is known for producing reimagined classics and contemporary interpretations of canonical works. The premiere of The Emporium adds a rare new entry to Wilder’s body of work, which includes Our Town and The Skin of Our Teeth, offering audiences the opportunity to experience a previously unfinished play from one of the 20th century’s defining theatrical voices.
