Classic Stage Company has announced the final two Rediscovery Readings of its 2025–26 season, featuring one-night-only presentations of RUR by Karel Čapek and Rope, adapted from Patrick Hamilton’s play.
The readings will take place at the Lynn F. Angelson Theater, 136 E. 13th St. On Monday, March 2, at 7 p.m., CSC will present RUR, adapted by Talene Monahon and directed by Jess Chayes. The series concludes on Monday, March 9, at 7 p.m., with Rope, adapted and directed by Gordon Greenberg.
Tickets are $20 and are on sale now. CSC FlexPass holders may attend all Rediscovery Readings free of charge.
“I can’t wait to share these two very different kinds of thrillers with the CSC audience,” Producing Artistic Director Jill Rafson said. “RUR takes a science-fiction approach that has grown increasingly relevant, while Rope returns a familiar story to the stage, where its tension can be fully realized.”
Originally written in 1920, RUR explores the ethical consequences of automation through the story of Rossum’s Universal Robots and is widely credited with introducing the word “robot” to the world. Monahon’s adaptation revisits the play through a contemporary lens shaped by modern debates around artificial intelligence.
Rope, inspired by the real-life Leopold and Loeb case, reimagines Hamilton’s thriller in 1957 Manhattan, unfolding as a murder mystery in reverse that examines privilege, power and moral recklessness.
Casting for both readings will be announced at a later date.
