A new political comedy inspired by the aftermath of the January 6 Capitol insurrection will premiere Off-Broadway next month at The Gene Frankel Theatre (24 Bond St, New York, NY 10012).
“Come and Knock Down My Door,” written by Alex Emanuel and directed by Philip Cruise, is scheduled to run May 7–30, with opening night set for May 8.
Presented by Thin Duke Productions in association with The Gene Frankel Theatre and Starna Productions, the play is described as a two-act political-situation comedy set on Jan. 7, 2021 — one day after the Capitol attack — as tensions from the 2020 presidential election and the COVID-19 pandemic linger.
The story follows a Lower East Side apartment shared by three roommates whose lives are thrown into chaos when one returns from Washington, D.C., after attending the events surrounding the Capitol breach. The characters grapple with fear, political divisions, and misunderstandings as they worry federal authorities may come knocking.
Cruise said the production aims to balance humor with reflection on a turbulent moment in recent history.
“If I can make the audience laugh while calling attention to a piece of history that so many are trying to rewrite and erase, I’m doing my job,” he said in a statement.
Emanuel said he wrote the first draft of the play in January 2021, drawing on personal experience and satire. The work has since evolved through readings at venues including The Chain Theatre and HB Studio, building toward its full production.
The cast includes Jared Ritter, Lana Ayrapetyants, Tammi Cubilette, Callie Fabac, and Vincent Lamberti, along with Cruise and Emanuel.
Performances will take place Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m., with a preview scheduled for May 7 at 7:30 p.m. Additional performances are set for the final week of the run, May 27–30.
The production runs approximately 110 minutes, including one intermission. General admission tickets are priced at $35 and are currently on sale.
