Nonprofit arts organization Coney Island USA has launched official guided walking tours highlighting the history of the neighborhood’s amusement district. The 90-minute tours are led by a licensed New York City tour guide and focus on the area’s past and present.
The walking route covers approximately one mile of the amusement district. Attendees will learn about former amusement parks that influenced modern entertainment, historic attractions like the Elephant Hotel, and figures from the neighborhood’s history.
Tours depart every Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. from Coney Island USA, located at 1208 Surf Avenue in the district’s oldest landmarked building. Weekday tours are also available by making a prior reservation online.
Tickets cost $35 per person and include admission to the Coney Island Museum following the tour. Established in 1983, the museum houses a collection of Coney Island photographs, paintings, architectural elements, vintage signs, and amusement-related items.
Founded in 1980, Coney Island USA produces public programming throughout the year, including the annual Mermaid Parade and the Coney Island Circus Sideshow. Tickets for the new walking tours are available through the organization’s official website.
