Dance/NYC promotes Monica Steffey to Director of Programming & Operations

Monica Steffey

Dance/NYC announced Friday the promotion of Monica Steffey to Director of Programming & Operations. Steffey previously served as the organization’s operations manager, where they strengthened internal systems, advanced cross-team coordination, and supported the nonprofit during a period of significant growth.

A Brooklyn-based leader and community organizer, Steffey has spent over a decade developing artist-driven initiatives in the U.S. and internationally, focusing on equity, embodiment, and collective sustainability. In 2020, they founded Wet Hairy Women, an art activist collective exploring bodily autonomy, gender, and choice through dance and art-making. Their work includes the immersive dance theater production UNTAMED and projects such as No Shave Wovember.

Steffey also led citywide COVID-19 response efforts with New York City Health + Hospitals’ Test & Trace Program, scaling operations from 100 to more than 500 staff. At Dance/NYC, they have contributed to operational strategy, strengthened organizational infrastructure, and cultivated a culture of transparency and trust.

“Dance has always been a site of advocacy for me, both on and off the stage,” Steffey said. “I’m excited to continue growing at Dance/NYC and to support the dance field in building more just and sustainable futures.”

Executive Director Raquel Du Toit praised Steffey’s leadership, calling her promotion “a reflection of both her deep commitment to Dance/NYC and her readiness to lead at this level.” The role completes the organization’s leadership framework as outlined in its Five-Year Strategic Plan.
