Dances Patrelle has announced the appointment of Christopher Charles McDaniel as its new artistic director, effective July 1, 2026. McDaniel replaces the company’s founder, Francis Patrelle, who established the New York City dance organization.

The leadership transition comes as the organization prepares for the 30th anniversary season of The Yorkville Nutcracker. The holiday production, choreographed by Patrelle, is set on the Upper East Side and has operated as a seasonal ballet tradition for three decades.

Board president Abi Stafford Lillo stated that McDaniel brings a wealth of talent to the position alongside a background as a teacher and performer. McDaniel previously studied under Patrelle as a teenager at Ballet Academy East and danced multiple roles in the company’s annual holiday production.

McDaniel’s professional career spans more than two decades, including roles as a principal dancer for the Dance Theatre of Harlem, and performances with the Los Angeles Ballet and Ballet San Antonio. Following his retirement from the stage, he joined the permanent faculty at the School of American Ballet and later became an adjunct professor of ballet at Marymount Manhattan College.

In his new role, McDaniel will oversee the artistic direction of the company, cultivate new partnerships, and look to expand performance opportunities for dancers. His future plans for the organization include commissioning new ballets and increasing community engagement throughout the region.
