Deaf West Theatre celebrated its 35th anniversary and expanding East Coast footprint with its inaugural New York City gala, One Night in Manhattan on Monday, Sept. 28 at Joe’s Pub. Led by artistic director DJ Kurs and managing director Jeff Perri, the organization honored Academy Award-winning actor Troy Kotsur, five-time Tony Award-winning producer Eva Price, and Tony Award-winning directors Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch.

Hosted by Barrett Foa, the evening featured performances by Spring Awakening cast members Kathryn Gallagher and Sandra Mae Frank, as well as LJ Benet and Josué Martinez from Deaf West’s American Idiot. The program included a Big River tribute from Michael McElroy and Tyrone Giordano, a musical medley by Elizabeth Stanley and Alexandria Wailes, and appearances by Michael Arden, Daniel Durant, Camryn Manheim, and Zachary Noah Piser.

Henry Gottfried and Sandra Mae Frank co-directed the gala, with music direction by Meghann Zervoulis Bate, casting by Spencer Gualdoni, and stage management by Rico Froehlich. Recent projects from the company include a summer developmental reading of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Whistle Down the Wind at New York Stage & Film and the record-breaking run of Elephant Shoes at Two River Theater in New Jersey.

This fall, Deaf West will co-produce Love Me, an off-Broadway theatrical experience created by comedian Drew Michael. The show runs for 22 performances from Oct. 24 through Nov. 22 at SoHo Playhouse.

Founded in Los Angeles in 1991, Deaf West Theatre integrates American Sign Language with spoken English to produce theater and media experiences. Over its 35-year history, the organization has produced Broadway revivals including Spring Awakening and Big River, alongside major productions such as Beethoven’s opera Fidelio with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
