The Dessoff Choirs, under the direction of Malcolm J. Merriweather, will present its annual holiday concerts in Brooklyn and Manhattan this December, including the program Welcome Yule and the interactive Messiah Sing.
Welcome Yule is set for Saturday, Dec. 6, at 4 p.m. at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Brooklyn. The concert will honor the 500th anniversary of composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina’s birth and will feature a mix of classical and holiday works, including pieces by Palestrina, Carl Orff, Anton Bruckner, Margaret Bonds, and traditional carols such as Silent Night and Hark the Herald Angels Sing. Soloists Jennifer Dapice and Nadine Lee will join the Dessoff Choirs for select arias, accompanied by pianist Steven Ryan.
The ensemble will continue the festivities with Messiah Sing on Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Audience members are invited to join the choir for Handel’s Messiah choruses, while Dessoff members perform the arias under Merriweather’s baton.
Celebrated for its century-long history of introducing forgotten and contemporary works to American audiences, The Dessoff Choirs recently marked its 100th season. Merriweather, Dessoff’s current music director, has highlighted works by Black women composers such as Margaret Bonds, Florence Price, and Valerie Capers, while continuing the tradition of performing pieces from the choir’s founding director, Margarete Dessoff.
