Guggenheim to present live performance of Rashid Johnson’s The Hikers on December 17

Works & Process and the Guggenheim (1071 5th Ave, New York, NY 10128) will present a rare live staging of Rashid Johnson’s The Hikers on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, with performances at 6:30 PM and 8:00 PM inside the famed Guggenheim Rotunda. Tickets begin at $30.

The presentation coincides with the Guggenheim’s exhibition Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers, offering audiences an opportunity to experience one of the artist’s most poignant works in an entirely new dimension. Originally conceived as a film, The Hikers explores the momentary but powerful connection between two anxious travelers whose paths converge—an encounter that is brief yet deeply transformative.

For this special event, the work has been reimagined for live performance, deepening the dialogue between dance, music, architecture, and Johnson’s multidisciplinary practice. With the museum’s spiraling rotunda as the stage, the space becomes an active component of the narrative, echoing both the intimacy and vastness of the emotional terrain the characters traverse.

The performance features Lloyd Knight and Leslie Andrea Williams, celebrated dancers from the Martha Graham Dance Company, whose expressive physicality is central to bringing Johnson’s vision to life. The score will be performed live by composer and multi-instrumentalist Aku Orraca-Tetteh, whose extensive collaborations include Florence + the Machine, Saul Williams, Santigold, TV On the Radio, and Bill T. Jones. Orraca-Tetteh’s presence on piano adds a dynamic sonic layer that further heightens the immediacy of the encounter.

Together, the creative forces of Rashid Johnson, choreographer Claudia Schreier, and these distinguished performers invite audiences into an immersive emotional world—one that contemplates vulnerability, connection, and the invisible threads that bind strangers for a moment in time.

With its fusion of contemporary art, dance, and live music in one of the world’s most iconic architectural settings, The Hikers promises to be among the most memorable cultural events of the season.
