La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, in association with My Balkans, will present From the Other Side: Reimagining Theatre From The Balkans, Edition 1.0 from Dec. 3-14 at the Ellen Stewart Theatre in Manhattan. The 10-day festival brings a broad selection of live performances, staged readings, archival video presentations, and discussions from Balkan artists to U.S. audiences for the first time.

The festival includes two full productions: They Are All Gone, by Doruntina Basha and directed by Andrej Nosov, exploring the lasting effects of the Srebrenica genocide, and Things That Burn Easily, written and directed by Vedrana Klepica, which examines family, isolation, and social catastrophe. Performances run Dec. 4-7 and Dec. 11-14, respectively.

In addition, three staged readings—The Last Girls on EarthAll Adventurous Women Do, and All of a Sudden, A River—highlight contemporary Balkan drama addressing social, political, and gender issues. Archival video presentations feature works by Aleksandar Hemon, Milan Ramšak Marković, and Oliver Frljić, providing audiences rare access to notable productions from the region.

Two roundtable discussions, ART/and/or/is POLITICS on Dec. 3 and Theatre and Its Context on Dec. 14, will explore the intersections of art and politics in the Balkans, considering the responsibilities of artists and the social impact of theatre.

“‘The Balkans’ is a political and cultural construct, a former warzone navigating ongoing tensions while striving to articulate its own identity,” said producer Beka Vučo. “The festival offers a lens into the region’s rich, complex, and often challenging cultural landscape.”

Tickets are $30, $25 for students and seniors, and ten discounted $10 tickets are available per performance online in advance. Staged readings and video presentations are free. More information is available at www.lamama.org.
