L’Alliance New York will bring two acclaimed productions from France’s Comédie-Française to Manhattan audiences this winter and spring through a pair of high-definition screenings at the Florence Gould Theater (55 E 59th St, New York, NY 10022).

The screenings — Twelfth Night or What You Will on Jan. 22 and Le Bourgeois gentilhomme on March 5 — will be shown at 7 p.m. at L’Alliance New York, 55 E. 59th St. Tickets start at $15. Both productions will be presented in French with English subtitles.

The Jan. 22 screening features Twelfth Night or What You Will (La Nuit des rois ou Tout ce que vous voulez), directed by Thomas Ostermeier, one of Europe’s leading interpreters of Shakespeare. Best known internationally for his modern staging of Hamlet, Ostermeier brings his signature physicality and contemporary sensibility to the Bard’s classic comedy in his first collaboration with the Comédie-Française.

The three-hour production, presented without intermission, is preceded by a 10-minute prerecorded interview. Organizers note that the performance contains nudity and scenes that may not be suitable for all audiences.

On March 5, audiences will see Le Bourgeois gentilhomme, Molière’s enduring comédie-ballet, in a bold new staging by directing partners Valérie Lesort and Christian Hecq. Rarely seen in the United States as a theatrical work, the satire follows a wealthy merchant’s comic attempts to rise into aristocratic society.

The two-hour-and-20-minute production, also presented without intermission, reimagines the 17th-century classic with fantastical costumes, puppetry and Balkan-inspired music. An 18-minute prerecorded interview will precede the screening.

L’Alliance New York said the presentation of Le Bourgeois gentilhomme will include contextual notes acknowledging that the work contains cultural stereotypes reflective of its historical period. The organization said it is presenting the production in its original form to encourage thoughtful discussion of its place in theatrical history.

The HD screenings are part of L’Alliance New York’s ongoing mission to connect New York audiences with French-language culture, cinema and performance. By partnering with Pathé Live and the Comédie-Française, the organization continues to offer access to internationally acclaimed productions rarely seen live in the United States.

Additional information and tickets for both screenings are available through L’Alliance New York.
